HGMS Field Trip to Parsons's Quarry, Parsons Tennessee
6 February 2010

The North Mississippi Gem & Mineral Society has invited the HGMS to join them during a
field trip to the Parson’s Quarry, 85 miles north northwest of Florence AL. This very large
quarry has a section which is not currently being mined, and which is littered with Devonian
fossils – trilobites, cephalopods, brachiopods, crinoids, and many more treasures.  There
are also fist-sized nodules of marcasite to be found.  Our club has been invited to join the
NMGMS on this venture, but we will need to provide ahead of time a reasonable head count
to the quarry operators.  Each attendee will need to prepare a Waiver of Liability (form
available at the Jan HGMS meeting or by email attachment).  Children must be
accompanied by a responsible adult, and must also have a Waiver signed by that adult.
Because of the unpredictability of January weather, the quarry and weatherman will
be asked for a trip-status update the week before the date.  In case of postponement, plan
on the next weekend.

Plan to meet at the quarry office at 7a.m.  Saturday morning to sign in and then be escorted
back to the collecting area.   The quarry closes at noon, so after a lunch stop at the
Hardees in Parsons, we will go down to the Hwy 69 road cuts near the TN River where we
may collect trilobites and other Silurian/Devonian fossils.  If you would like to spend Friday
night at the Deerfield Inn in Parsons, the  # is (731)-847-4700.  Rooms are $52.99 plus tax
per night.

If you can't make the quarry office by 7a.m. that's okay – check in at the office and they will
escort you back  to the collecting site.  You still have to be out by noon.  For questions or
further information, contact Bill Friday, 256-883-8487
